Rocketoons Jr. - 5th Graders Create Real Cartoons

After seven months of creating, writing, revising, recording, directing, producing, and managing their project, a handful of 5th grade students in Mrs. Overway's class celebrated the completion of their CARTOONS.

The Rocketoons Jr. premier was held at Grand Rapids Community College campus in Grand Rapids. Animation students from Ferris State University's animation and game design program and Tim Wheeler of Wheeler Creative Studios worked with RPI students to bring these short stories to life.

Stay tuned for info on where to view these amazing and creative cartoons!

College Prep - The 6th Grade College Tour

1/28/2016

Every year, every 6th grade student in Rocket City has an opportunity to visit a college campus. RP is the first and only district in the county that offers a 6th grade college field trip. The trip provides these young students with an introduction to life on campus. It breaks down barriers of unfamiliarity and strangeness for the student who can't imagine him/herself taking that step out of his/her comfort zone, and sets a course for post secondary learning and success.

Not every student will choose college. There are other choices that will lead to equally fulfilling lifetime success, such as trade school and apprenticeships. College is a big step and a great unknown to many students. The experience of being on campus, eating in a dorm cafeteria, seeing a dorm room, sitting in a lecture hall, and meeting college students and professors lays the groundwork and builds confidence for students who want to take a college track but find it intimidating or out of reach. Every student visits one of these gracious host universities: MSU, WMU, FSU, Hope, GVSU.

Is this a REAL rocket?

1/13/2016

Time to test your Reeths-Puffer history! Did you know that our rocket inside of Rocket Stadium is a real rocket? Did you know that it was built in Germany and designed for space exploration? Well, now you do.

Thanks to Mr. Jack Moore, a World War II veteran and former RP School Bus Transportation Supervisor, we know quite a bit about our beloved rocket. We have the upper section of a V2 rocket that was constructed in Germany in the 1940s, and it was later purchased by Reeths-Puffer in the 1970s.

After World War II, many German scientists came to America, including a man by the name of Wernher von Braun. Mr. von Braun was the lead scientist responsible for the development of the V2, and when he first came to the U.S. he was working at Fort Bliss, Texas, which is where Jack Moore was stationed at the time.
In addition to his work on the V2 rocket, von Braun helped develop the Redstone missile and Saturn V. The Saturn V was the rocket that took the first men to the moon in 1969. Mr. von Braun would later relocate to Washington, D.C., where he was appointed as NASA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Planning at NASA Headquarters.

This rocket, designed in hopes of reaching for the stars, is an important and appropriate symbol for Rocket City, and for all of our Rockets who also continue to reach for the stars. Thank you, Jack Moore, for your courageous service to our country, and for helping us tell this important Reeths-Puffer story for generations to come!

While helping America win the space war, von Braun did a great deal of his work in Huntsville, Alabama. Huntsville’s nickname? Rocket City!

Teacher Feature: Mrs. Burton

Welcome to our newest feature. Teacher Feature, to be exact. Reeths-Puffer senior Emily Bride has her sights set on a career in editing and publishing, so she is going back in time to talk with the teachers who played a role in her decision to follow this path. You will learn about Emily (and about life as a high school senior) along the way, and you will certainly learn about several of the wonderful teachers here in Rocket City. Fire up the time machine and let the journey begin!

"My class has purchased 3 Moby Max tablets thanks to the generosity of Y-knot Embroidery," wrote Mrs. Amy Yarian. "We use these on a daily basis to help with our reading and math skills. One student in my class said 'Y-knot was so nice to us. I love using a tablet to read on.'  Thank you so much to Tammy Whynot and her business for letting us be the beneficiaries of her good will.
